8. Scorpion

Estimated Deaths Per Year: ~3,000
Location: India, Mexico, North Africa, Middle East
Scorpions are ancient arachnids that have been around for millions of years. While most species are harmless to humans, a few — like the Indian red scorpion and deathstalker — are highly venomous and responsible for thousands of deaths every year.
Scorpion stings can cause intense pain, swelling, difficulty breathing, convulsions, and in severe cases, death — especially in children. In rural India and parts of Mexico, deaths often occur because medical help is far away, and people rely on traditional remedies that don’t work.
Scorpions tend to hide in dark places — shoes, blankets, crevices — making them easy to accidentally disturb. Farmers, construction workers, and rural dwellers are the most at risk. Children are especially vulnerable to severe reactions from stings.
Anti-venom exists but is not always accessible. Preventive measures like wearing shoes, checking clothes, and using insect control have proven effective in reducing fatal cases.
