Ascaris is a type of parasitic roundworm that infects the human intestine. While it may not seem as deadly as a lion or snake, Ascaris causes a disease called ascariasis that leads to thousands of deaths, especially among children in poor sanitation conditions.

Infected individuals may show no early symptoms, but as the worms grow and multiply, they block the intestines and interfere with nutrient absorption. In severe cases, this leads to malnutrition, stunted growth, and intestinal ruptures. Fatalities are often caused by bowel obstruction or complications involving other organs.

The parasite spreads through contaminated food, water, or hands. Poor hygiene and lack of access to clean toilets are the main risk factors. Ascariasis is particularly common in South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and parts of Latin America.

Fortunately, treatment is simple and cost-effective — a single dose of antiparasitic medication. But without awareness and basic sanitation, reinfection is common, especially in children.
