10. Crocodile

Estimated Deaths Per Year: ~1,000
Location: Africa, Asia, Australia
Crocodiles are some of the most dangerous reptiles on the planet. With prehistoric origins and unmatched ambush tactics, they are feared by people who live near rivers and lakes. Among the various species, the Nile crocodile and saltwater crocodile are the most aggressive and responsible for most human deaths globally.
Crocodiles are ambush predators — they wait near the edges of water bodies and strike with lightning speed when prey (including humans) comes near. With powerful jaws capable of crushing bones and dragging victims underwater, survival chances are extremely slim. They often drown their prey before swallowing it whole or tearing it apart.
Many crocodile attacks occur in remote areas where people rely on river water for daily needs like bathing, fishing, or washing clothes. These attacks are rarely reported but are common in countries like India, Australia, and parts of Africa. Crocodiles have even been known to attack boats.
Efforts to educate riverine communities, use barriers, and set up warning signs have helped, but crocodile attacks continue to be a major concern in rural and wildlife-rich areas.
