11. Tapeworm (Parasitic Flatworm)

Estimated Deaths Per Year: ~700
Location: Worldwide, especially Asia and Africa
Unlike most animals on this list, the tapeworm doesn’t bite, charge, or sting — it silently invades the human body. Tapeworms are parasitic flatworms that can live inside your intestines for years, often without immediate symptoms.
The most dangerous tapeworms can cause cysticercosis, a disease that affects the brain, muscles, and other tissues. This occurs when larvae from the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) spread through contaminated food or water. Brain infection can lead to seizures, headaches, and even death.
Poor sanitation, lack of clean drinking water, and improper food handling are the main reasons why tapeworm infections are so common in developing countries. In rural India, Africa, and parts of Latin America, tapeworm-related deaths are still a major public health concern.
Treatment is available through antiparasitic medication, but prevention is key. Washing vegetables, thoroughly cooking meat, and maintaining hygiene can dramatically reduce the risk.
