12. Hippopotamus

Estimated Deaths Per Year: ~500
Location: Sub-Saharan Africa
The hippopotamus may look calm and slow, but it is one of the deadliest land animals in Africa. Weighing between 1,500 and 3,000 kg, these semi-aquatic mammals are extremely territorial — especially in rivers and lakes where they live.
Hippos kill more people in Africa each year than lions, crocodiles, or elephants. Most fatalities occur when boats or fishermen unknowingly enter a hippo’s territory. In such cases, the hippo will charge, flip the boat, and attack with massive tusks that can crush bone.
They are most dangerous in water, but also fast on land — capable of running up to 30 km/h for short distances. If surprised or cornered, they will not hesitate to charge humans or vehicles. Mothers with calves are especially aggressive.
Despite their danger, hippos are often not seen as threats until it’s too late. Tourists are often warned to stay far from riverbanks and avoid night walks near water bodies where hippos graze.
