The tiny mosquito is, by far, the deadliest animal in the world. These flying insects spread malaria, dengue, Zika virus, yellow fever, chikungunya, and more. Malaria alone kills over 600,000 people annually — mostly children under five in Africa.
What makes mosquitoes dangerous is their ability to carry disease from one person to another. They are found in nearly every corner of the globe and thrive in warm, humid climates. Climate change is helping them expand into new areas.
Mosquitoes breed in standing water — puddles, buckets, plant pots — making it very difficult to control them in crowded or rural environments. Prevention is key: mosquito nets, repellents, window screens, and eliminating stagnant water help reduce bites.
Governments and organizations continue to fight this global health crisis with vaccines (like the new malaria vaccine), mosquito control programs, and awareness campaigns. But until a permanent solution is found, the mosquito will remain mankind’s deadliest enemy.
