4. Dog (via Rabies)

Estimated Deaths Per Year: ~25,000–35,000
Location: Worldwide, especially Asia and Africa
Dogs are known as man’s best friend — but unvaccinated stray dogs are one of the deadliest animals when it comes to spreading rabies. The rabies virus attacks the brain and nervous system and is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear.
Most human rabies cases are due to dog bites in countries where canine vaccination is low. India alone accounts for around 35% of global rabies deaths. The disease progresses rapidly and includes symptoms such as confusion, fear of water, hallucinations, and paralysis.
Post-bite treatment is effective — but only if given quickly. Unfortunately, rural areas often lack access to rabies vaccines or awareness of proper first aid after a bite. Children are especially vulnerable, as they are more likely to play with stray dogs.
Vaccinating pets, controlling stray populations, and raising awareness are the best strategies to reduce rabies-related deaths. Programs in countries like Sri Lanka and Thailand have already seen success.
