14. Nutmeg

Nutmeg is a popular spice used in baking and cooking, but few know that it can be toxic in large amounts. The spice contains myristicin, a natural compound that affects the central nervous system and can cause hallucinations, nausea, dizziness, and even seizures.
Just 2 teaspoons of nutmeg can lead to nutmeg poisoning, especially if consumed raw. People have ended up in emergency rooms after consuming high doses of nutmeg in an attempt to get “high,” unaware of its dangerous effects.
The spice is safe in small amounts used for flavoring, but care should be taken not to overuse it. This is particularly important in recipes involving children, where accidental overdose can happen more easily.
Because it’s available in powdered form, it’s also easier to mismeasure or misuse nutmeg compared to other spices. It’s best to use it sparingly and store it safely out of reach of children.
