The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird remains one of the most iconic and mysterious aircraft ever developed. Operating from the 1960s until the 1990s, it could cruise at Mach 3.3 (approx. 2,193 mph or 3,529 km/h) — making it the fastest manned air-breathing jet aircraft in history.

Developed by Lockheed’s top-secret Skunk Works division, the SR-71 was built primarily for high-altitude reconnaissance during the Cold War. It could fly so high and fast that missiles could never catch it — a trait that made it virtually untouchable. If a missile was detected, the Blackbird could simply outrun it.

The Blackbird’s sleek, black titanium body helped dissipate heat and absorb radar signals, giving it stealth-like properties. At top speed, its surface could reach temperatures exceeding 600°F (316°C), and the air friction caused the aircraft to expand in mid-air.

Despite being retired, no other manned jet aircraft has reached its speed in regular operation, solidifying the SR-71’s place in aviation history.
